Body · BroadBand Light

BBL heroic.

Targeted broadband light for sun damage, age spots, and redness on the body — chest, hands, arms, neck, shoulders. Sciton BBL Heroic with larger spot sizes built for body-area treatment.

What is BBL Heroic

BroadBand light, for the body.

BBL Heroic is the body-area variant of Sciton's BroadBand Light platform. It delivers pulses of light across a range of wavelengths through a handpiece — the wavelengths target both pigment (melanin in age spots and sun spots) and superficial blood vessels (the redness and vascular components). The same energy that breaks up pigment also reduces redness, in one session.

It is a different tool than BBL Hero, which we use on the face. Heroic has larger spot sizes and the power to cover bigger surfaces — chest, back, hands, arms, shoulders. The face protocol lives on our photofacial / IPL page.

BBL Heroic is performed in a series. Most patients book 3–5 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Visible improvement typically appears by week 2; the final result of each session lands at 4–6 weeks. The treatment has FDA clearance for pigmented and vascular lesions.

How it works at Reviv

A Sciton platform, a careful screen.

At Reviv Med Spa in Millbrae, BBL Heroic is performed by our Aesthetic Nurse Megan Sosnick, RN, with all device settings and treatment protocols approved by our Medical Director Dr. Gayle Misle, MD. Every consultation starts with a face-to-face skin assessment — we look at your skin tone, sun history, pigment pattern, and medical history before we ever fire the device.

Reviv runs both ends of the BBL platform. We use the right tool for the case:

Sciton BBL Heroic body areas
Larger spot sizes and the power to cover the chest, back, arms, hands, neck, and shoulders. Built for body-area pigment and vascular work.
Sciton BBL Hero face
Faster pulse delivery for face-area treatment. Lives on our photofacial / IPL page.

Settings are customized based on your skin type, the area being treated, and the depth of the pigment or redness. Treatment day takes 30–60 minutes depending on the area. Topical numbing is available; cooling is built into the handpiece. Most patients describe the sensation as a warm snap.

You will see treated pigmented spots darken in the first 24–72 hours — a "coffee-ground" appearance is normal and expected. The pigment slough off naturally over 7–10 days. Do not pick. Strict sun avoidance and SPF 30+ for at least 2 weeks after each session.

Areas commonly treated

Six body areas, one tool.

Most patients start with the chest and hands — the two areas where sun damage is most visible and most often noticed in the mirror. We will identify priority areas in your consultation.

Chest & décolleté

Sun damage and uneven tone on the chest — one of the most common reasons patients book BBL Heroic.

Back of hands

Age spots and pigment on the dorsum of the hands. Often paired with chest in the same session.

Arms (forearms, upper arms)

Sun spots, freckling, and uneven pigment on the forearms and upper arms.

Neck

Pigment, redness, and poikiloderma on the lateral neck and clavicle area.

Shoulders

Sun-exposed shoulder pigment from years of summers and shoulder-baring tops.

Upper back

Sun damage, freckling, and uneven tone on the upper back and shoulder blades.

What it addresses

Pigment, redness, tone.

Sun damage on the body

Years of sun exposure leave the chest, hands, arms, and shoulders with brown spots, freckling, and uneven tone. BBL Heroic targets the pigment and breaks it up over a series of sessions.

Age spots (lentigines)

The flat brown spots that show up on the back of the hands, forearms, and chest in patients over 40. These respond particularly well to broadband light.

Redness & vascular lesions

Diffuse redness and small visible blood vessels on the chest, neck, and face. The vascular wavelengths target oxyhemoglobin in superficial vessels.

Poikiloderma of the neck

The characteristic mottled red-brown pattern on the lateral neck from chronic sun exposure. BBL Heroic addresses both the pigment and the redness components.

Uneven body tone

Patients who treat their face but feel their chest, neck, and hands tell a different story. BBL Heroic on the body is the matching pass.

Before you book

What to know, in four lines.

  1. 01

BBL Heroic is the body-area variant of Sciton's BroadBand Light platform — larger spot sizes and the power to cover bigger surfaces. Different from BBL Hero, which we use on the face (see our photofacial / IPL page).

  2. 02

Pigmented spots get darker before they fade. Within 24–72 hours of treatment, age spots and sun spots will look more visible — they are coming up to the surface to slough off. Plan around social events.

  3. 03

BBL Heroic is performed in a series. Most patients book 3–5 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Visible improvement typically appears by week 2; final result lands at 4–6 weeks after the last session.

  4. 04

Pricing depends on the area and the size of the area. We quote in writing at consultation — multi-session packages bring per-session cost down.

What to expect

From day zero, to week six.

Day 0

Treatment day. 30–60 min depending on the area. Topical numbing optional. Sensation is a warm snap, like a rubber band — most patients describe it as 3–5 out of 10.

Days 1–3

Treated pigment darkens and may look like coffee grounds on the skin. This is normal — the pigment is sloughing off. Mild redness and warmth are typical for 24–48 hours.

Days 4–10

Darkened spots flake off naturally. Do not pick or scrub. The skin underneath is fresher and more even. Strict sun avoidance and SPF 30+ are non-negotiable.

Weeks 4–6

Final result of the session is visible. We assess together and book the next session if a series is in your plan. Most patients see meaningful improvement by session 2 or 3.

Pricing

What it actually costs.

BBL Heroic pricing at Reviv depends on the area and the size of the area — back of hands costs less than full chest; chest costs less than full back. We quote in writing at consultation, before any treatment begins, and we offer multi-session packages so per-session cost is lower than buying sessions one at a time.

Honest fit

Who it's for — and who it isn't.

A good fit if
  • Adults with sun damage, age spots, or uneven pigment on the chest, hands, arms, neck, or shoulders
  • Patients who treat their face and want their body skin to match
  • Patients with poikiloderma of the neck (mottled red-brown pattern)
  • Patients with diffuse redness or small visible blood vessels on the chest or neck
Not for you if
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding patients
  • Patients with a recent tan or planning sun exposure during the treatment series
  • Patients on photosensitizing medications (e.g., recent isotretinoin) — we screen at consultation
  • Patients with very deep skin tones — broadband light targets pigment and is not the right tool for every skin type. We will assess honestly at consultation.

I've tried four other med spas in the Bay Area. Reviv is the only one where I feel genuinely listened to. Worth the drive from the city.

Conservative, honest, and skilled. They told me I didn't need half of what I was considering — and the things they did do were perfect.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

What is BBL Heroic, and how is it different from BBL Hero?

BBL Heroic and BBL Hero are both Sciton BroadBand Light platforms — the same family of broadband light devices. Heroic is built for body-area treatment, with larger spot sizes and the power to cover bigger surfaces like the chest, back, and legs. Hero is what we use on the face. We carry both at Reviv. The face protocol lives on our photofacial / IPL page.

How many BBL Heroic sessions will I need?

Most patients book a series of 3–5 sessions spaced 4–6 weeks apart. Patients with significant sun damage may need a longer series. Visible improvement typically appears by week 2; the final result of each session lands at 4–6 weeks. We assess together at each session and adjust the plan based on how your skin is responding.

Does BBL Heroic hurt?

Most patients describe the sensation as a warm snap, similar to a rubber band — a 3–5 out of 10. Topical numbing is available if you prefer. We use cooling air during the session to keep the skin comfortable.

Why do my spots look darker after treatment?

This is normal and expected. The light energy heats the pigment in the spot, which then rises to the surface and sloughs off over 7–10 days. The "coffee-ground" appearance for 24–72 hours after treatment is the sign that the treatment worked. Plan around social events.

Is there downtime?

Mild redness and warmth for 24–48 hours, similar to a soft sunburn. Treated pigmented spots darken and flake off over 7–10 days. Most patients return to normal activities the same day; we ask for strict sun avoidance and SPF 30+ for at least 2 weeks after each session.

How much does BBL Heroic cost?

Pricing depends on the area treated and the size of the area — back of hands costs less than full chest; chest costs less than full back. We quote in writing at consultation and offer multi-session packages so per-session cost is lower than buying sessions one at a time.

Can BBL Heroic remove all my sun damage?

A full series typically removes the majority of visible sun damage and pigment in the treated area. New pigment can develop over time with continued sun exposure, which is why we emphasize SPF and sun avoidance during and after the series. Periodic maintenance sessions every 12–18 months keep the result stable.

Can I tan before or during my BBL series?

No — please avoid sun exposure and self-tanner for at least 4 weeks before each session. Tanned skin contains extra melanin, which competes with the target pigment and increases the risk of burns or unintended pigment changes. SPF 30+ daily during the series.

Are there side effects?

Mild redness, warmth, and the expected pigment darkening (which is the desired effect). Rare side effects include blistering, prolonged pigment changes, or scarring — almost always related to sun exposure or improper settings. We screen carefully and start conservative.

Who should not get BBL Heroic?

Patients who are pregnant, have a recent tan, are on photosensitizing medications (including recent isotretinoin), or have certain skin types where broadband light is not the right tool. We screen at consultation and tell you honestly whether BBL Heroic is the right fit.
